The Malay National Congress 1957: Protest Against The Loss Of Malay Political Power On The Verge Of Malayan Independence
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Malay National Congress of 1D was very significant as a manifestation of dissatisfaction among a faction of Malays regarding independence, which had yet to be achieved in Malaya. It was also of great interest mainly because it attracted a combination of veteran nationalists which included Dato' Onn Jaafar, Dr. Burhanuddin Al-Helmy and Ahmad Boestamam. Together they opposed the UMNO (United Malays National Organization) leaders whom they believed had sidelined Malay interests, which they themselves had long fought for. Their presence added to the number of groups opposing the Alliance prior to Malayan Independence in the year 1957.
