Abstract

Economic transformation can lead to dependency and competition particularly among potential industrialised countries in the Asia Pacific region due to their government intervention and their outward looking policies. Besides political stability, the quality of government planning and intervention are the major factors contributing to the high growth phenomenon. However, under open economy, Southeast Asian countries also have to compete with the newly industrialised countries or the NICs. Faced with this challenge, it is suggested that Southeast Asian countries should continue with their outward looking strategy while increasing trade among themselves and those with other countries in the Asia pacific region. At the same time they should upgrade their infrastructure, manpower supply and local industry technology.
