Abstract

The objective of the study was to examine the changes in physical and socio-economic aspects of households who were involved in squatter resettlement programme in Bukit Chagar, Johor Baru, Johor. In this programme, families were moved from squatter areas to high rise low cost flat in the city. This study emphasized on changes in physical environment, occupation, income, family expenditure, children education, neighbourliness and transportation after moving to the city centre. It also identified the level of housing satisfaction experienced by the respondents. Sixty Malay households were randomly selected using simple random sampling technique for this study. Data were collected by interviews and observation based on questionnaires. Data analysis showed an increment in family budget and housing expenditure after moving into the flat. The result also showed that life before and after moving into the flat was about the same in the aspects of employment, income stability, employment appropriateness, family's health, neighbourliness and children's education. A low satisfaction level was experienced by the respondents after the resettlement for housing unit, family relationship, employment, income stability and sufficiency of family income. However, a high satisfaction level was experienced for neighbourliness and transportation. In general, it indicates that most of the households experienced a moderate satisfaction with their present houses. It shows that there are some aspects of the housing system which are not satisfactory to the households concerned. These factors should be taken into account in future squatter resettlement programmes.
