Abstract

Sullivan's essay published last year by the Royal Asiatic Society is one of a number of recent publications by Western scholars on pre-colonial state systems which purport, inter alia to update, supplement or even challenge the findings presented by J.M. Gullick in a book which must now be considered a classic in this field (Gullick, 1958). As such, these books present us with rather different, indeed often contrasting pictures of "traditional" Southeast Asian slate structures.
