Ciri Akademik Cemerlang di Universiti Awam Malaysia

Abstract
Di dalam sistem universiti, asas utama dalam mengenal pasti kecemerlangan bakat akademik dan memberi ganjaran atau pengiktirafan kepada kecemerlangan ialah melalui proses kenaikan pangkat ke jawatan profesor. Namun, kajian atau penilaian terhadap tahap kecemerlangan kumpulan profesor adalah sangat terhad. Isu utama berkaitan profesor cemerlang bukan sahaja berkenaan kekeliruan definisi atau terma tugasan yang tidak jelas tetapi ia juga berkaitan dengan terma “kepimpinan akademik” yang belum dikaji secara mendalam. Oleh itu, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mencirikan aspek kecemerlangan profesor kanan dengan mengenal pasti kekuatan dan kekurangan aspek kepimpinan mereka. Kajian berbentuk kualitatif ini menggunakan pendekatan analisis dokumen ke atas latar kerjaya (LK) atau vitae kurikulum profesor kanan di universiti awam (UA). Responden dipilih berasaskan kaedah pensampelan bertujuan melibatkan sepuluh orang profesor kanan berjawatan VK 5 (Gred A) mewakili empat jenis UA, iaitu universiti penyelidikan, komprehensif, teknikal dan berfokus. Hasil kajian menunjukkan secara keseluruhannya, ciri profesor kanan di UA tidak seimbang dan cenderung melibatkan aktiviti serlahan akademik melibatkan aktiviti pengajaran, penyelidikan dan pengurusan akademik, tetapi kurang perhatian
kepada beberapa peranan asas lain seperti pembangunan kepakaran berterusan dan tanggungjawab sebagai intelek awam. Hasil kajian juga menunjukkan ketidakseimbangan dalam ciri kepimpinan profesor kanan disebabkan oleh fokus yang berlebihan kepada tugasan dalam ekosistem universiti sendiri dan kurang kepada aktiviti di luar universiti, di peringkat serantau dan antarabangsa. Hasil kajian ini memberi beberapa implikasi kepada teori kepimpinan akademik, pembangunan dasar serta status dan kerelevanan profesion akademik di Malaysia.
