Pilihan Nasionalis Untuk Malaysia
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article explores the history, potential and problems of nationalism in the Malaysian context with a view to evaluating its contemporary relevancе. The Malaysian nation is viewed as a product of colonialism, but lacking a strong coherent pan-Malaysian nationalist heritage owing to the history of British colonialism in this region and its consequences for ethnic relations. However, more than three decades after Malayan independence, progressive nationalism is still viewed as relevant for addressing the continuing heritage of imperialism, especially in the economic and cultural spheres, and also as a basis for forging the nation, albeit belatedly. Finally, the article reviews recent political developments and their possible consequences for the neonationalist project.
