Abstract
This paper highlights the differences in the patterns of industrialisation between Asian NICs and Malaysia with a special focus on the impact of global political economic conditions on local conjunctures. After a comparative analysis on various aspects of industrialisation in the countries involved, the paper concludes as follows: while Malaysia and Singapore differ from the rest of the NICs in that they rely significantly on foreign capital and concentrate mainly on electronic, textile and petrochemical industries, they show a similar trend of industrialisation process, notwitthstanding extensive state participation in heavy industry in Malaysia. Of course Malaysia differs from Singapore as well: besides being riddled with a rather delicate ethnic divisions in the society which is unproblematic in Singapore, it has also embarked on somewhat ineffective industrialisation strategies. This, the paper argues, is doubly disadvantageous in a global trend towards protectionism.
