Abstract
This article attempts to show that the Malay Ruler under the British Residential system were not powerless puppets whose duities were confined to affixing their signatures and accepting financial positions. While performing ceremonial roles they also were able to disagree with their Residents and often their opposition to British policies was quite effective.
