Challenges in the Current State of Information Delivery in Facility Management
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the ever-evolving landscape of facility management (FM), efficient information delivery and management are crucial for driving innovation and operational success. This article examines the current state of information delivery within the FM sector, highlighting the multifaceted challenges it faces. As FM increasingly adopts digital infrastructure, streamlining information processes becomes essential for enhancing operational effectiveness and strategic decision-making. The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review and semi-structured interviews with various FM professionals, analysed using content analysis to identify existing gaps in information delivery systems and explore innovative solutions being implemented across the industry. Key challenges identified include integrating internet of things (IoT) devices and smart technologies into legacy systems, which often leads to issues with data security, privacy and interoperability. Information overload is another critical challenge as FM professionals struggle to sift through vast amounts of data to extract actionable insights. Additionally, the article discusses cultural and organisational barriers to adopting new technologies in FM, such as resistance to change and a lack of skilled personnel. The main findings from the interview sessions reveal that data security, interoperability and information overload are significant concerns, while there is optimism about the potential of building information modelling (BIM) and other emerging technologies to address these issues. Despite the challenges, integrating BIM provides substantial opportunities to optimise information delivery in FM. By embracing innovative solutions and fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation, FM professionals can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.
