Exploring the Factors For the Use of Building Information Modelling in Historic Buildings
Main Article Content
Abstract
Global concern in the preservation of buildings has been increasing rapidly. Building information modelling (BIM) offers excellent opportunities to improve conservation practice in such buildings. This study ascertains what factors affect BIM adoption in historic buildings, taking specifically the case of Liao Cheng. The quantitative method was applied using an online questionnaire sent to 310 recipients representing experts in heritage conservation. The major challenges that emanate from the findings are: (1) the high cost of BIM implementation, (2) public awareness or specialised training and (3) dependence on political and organisational support. The argument is constructed in an exclusively diverse way for these challenges through the views of professionals from both China and Malaysia. Dealing with such issues might greatly improve BIM adoption. In this line, the study puts forward that interventions would have to result in specialised training programmes, policy frameworks and relevant BIM tools. Further research should include longitudinal studies, cross-cultural studies and integrating BIM with other emerging technologies for further studies in this field. Such findings may substantially help the employers who are the decision-makers or policy framer in promoting the awareness of adopting BIM for the preservation of historic buildings.
