KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities

Abstract

This issue features five articles across four areas of the humanities, namely translation, history, philosophy and Islamic culture. The first paper is an analysis of the translation of Chengyu, a subcategory of Chinese proverbs, into Malay. The analysis shows that translations are successful when they involve concepts that are shared in both languages. However, because of the nature of the source proverbs, accurate translation is not always achieved – leading to translations that are embellished, different in meaning from the original form and indeed some which have no meaning. These findings reinforce the importance of possessing a firm understanding of the derivation and conveyance of meaning from the source text for successful and accurate translation to happen.
