Abstract

It is now established that g-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of both vertebrates and invertebrates. On the basis of electrophysiological studies, GABA receptors are classified into three types: GABAA, GABAB, and GABAC. In this study, the effect of GABA on 34 identified Achatina fulica Ferussac neurons (locally know as siput babi) were examined using conventional electrophysiological recording techniques. Result obtained from this study indicate that GABA induces 3 different responses in Achatina fulica Ferussac neurons, similar to those reported on the neurons of other mollusks Aplysia and Helix.
