Awareness of Climate Change and Environmental Issues among Farmers in Kelantan, Malaysia

Climate change is one of the most critical global challenges facing society today. It is driven by a combination of human activities and natural processes, while limited public understanding of climate change can constrain effective responses and adaptation. This study therefore aimed to examine the demographic profile and level of climate change awareness among farmers in Kelantan, Malaysia, as well as to assess the efforts and roles of relevant agencies in responding to climate-related disasters. Purposive and snowball sampling methods were employed to select 80 farmers who participated in the survey. The results showed that male farmers constituted the majority of respondents (73.8%), while female farmers accounted for 26.3%. Overall, farmers demonstrated a high level of awareness of climate change, with the mean scores for individual awareness items generally approaching 5.0. This relatively high level of awareness suggests that farmers recognise the importance of climate change and its potential implications for their livelihoods and well-being. Greater awareness can encourage farmers to adopt more environmentally responsible practices and strengthen their commitment to protecting and conserving natural resources that are essential for sustainable livelihoods.
