Abstract
Following a brief review of literature, this paper reveals a theoretical basis to conceptualize metamemory. In this conceptualization metamemory is seen as a person's knowledge of memory processes implicated in storage, comprehension and retrieval of information to abstract meanings from item to be remembered. The above conceptualization was subsequently employed to guide three research studies . The first study was concerned with the development of an instrument to measure primary school children's awareness of metamemory. The developed instrument was identified as 'Metamemory Exercise' questionaire. The second study was an effort to ascertain factors forming the basis of metamemory. Five factors were identified and described . The third. study was an attempt to correlate scores on
metamemory obtained by primary school children with their achievement scores on various subjects. Metamemory scores were found to correlate at a moderate level with achievement scores. The discussion part of this paper proposes that since achievement in school subjects possesses a memory basis, it implies that metamemory correlates moderately with memory-based performance. In addition, it is also proposed that metamemorial awareness may be further explored as an alternative cognitive determinent of academic performance
