Abstract
The analysis indicated that there were similarities in the characteristics of the different categories of teaching and learning. For example, 'directed' teaching could be linked to three categories of learning outcomes which focused on the reception and reproduction of information. This meant that the sample perceived learning as a passive process. On the other hand, the two remaining categories of learning outcomes which focused on developing insight of the individual, creating new knowledge and deeper understanding of information or knowledge - i.e. active participation of the learners, were linked to the 'open' category of teaching.
